What began as an unexpected misprint—where my printer stopped partway through—sat quietly in my studio for weeks. When I returned to it, I decided to try printing the artwork again on the same sheet. The result was a rich, darker band of blue at the top, as if night had fallen over the blooms.
Originally, I planned to gild only the petals in gold leaf. But after sealing them, I experimented with tiny dots of gold mixion relief across the darker band. When I laid down the gold leaf, a constellation emerged—poppies blooming beneath a starry night sky.
The hand-gilded gold outlines bring each petal to life, making the flowers appear luminous and full of movement. The darker sky above adds a sense of depth and wonder, turning a quiet botanical into a scene you can almost step into.
