Tulips 2 - Gouache Embellished

This one-of-a-kind version of "Tulips 2" revisits a work from my broader tulip series through the addition of hand-applied gouache.

The original painting was inspired by the annual tulip festival in Washington’s Skagit Valley. Three blooms in pink, plum, and coral rise through the composition at different angles, surrounded by elongated leaves in muted greens, blue, and yellow.

For this embellished version, I added a dense field of hand-painted circular and looping lines across the pale blue background. The repeated marks create movement around the flowers and make the surface significantly more active and layered than the original digital print. Variations in line weight, spacing, and brush pressure remain visible, emphasizing the physical handwork.

The combination of simplified digital forms and individually painted gouache marks brings together two stages of my process: the original digital painting and a later exploration of physical pattern, repetition, and surface.

Because the embellishment was painted individually by hand, this is a unique physical version of "Tulips 2" and will not be reproduced in exactly the same form.
